European Cross Country, Brussels

Dublin club athletes were part of the Irish team  at the the 29th European Cross-Country Championships held in Brussels, Belgium on Sunday (December 10).  The day’s highlight was a win for the men’s U20 team with Jonas Stafford of UCD AC finishing 10th and third placer for the team. At senior level, Brian Fay of Raheny Shamrock AC finished 22nd in the men’s race. The team ended up a fighting fourth. In the U23 races, Abdel Ladjel of Donore Harriers finished 51st and  the team tenth in the men’s race, while Aoife Coffey of Lucan Harriers was 66th and the team 11th in the women’s race. Well done to Nicholas Griggs third overall in the U20 men’s race and to Fionnuala McCormack, running her 18th Euro Cross, who finished 4th in the women’s senior race. For the first time, men and women ran the same distance in all categories – 5km U20, 7km U23 and 9km senior. Turkey will host next year’s championships.


Efrem Gidey  of Clonliffe Harriers was in Paris on Sunday (December 10) where he led home 8,624 finishers at the 10km de la Tour Eiffel with a winning time of 28 mins 52 secs. Second was Moroccan athlete Mohamed el Talhaoui in 29:15. Conditions were wet and windy.
